A Korean inspired dish, sweet soy garlic chicken popcorn is our version of the famous Bon chon sweet soy garlic chicken, but made with chicken poppers. This sweet-savory dish will surely delight every Korean loving appetite.

     This dish, Sweet Soy Garlic Chicken Popcorn (Chicken Poppers ) is made of chicken breast (bite size cut) marinated and dredged into flour and then fried. While the Sweet Soy Garlic Sauce is made out of sugar (or Honey) soy sauce, vinegar, garlic paste, water and cornstarch simmered until sauce thickens. Then, mix the fried chicken poppers/ popcorn to the sauce mixture until well coated.

HOW TO COOK Sweet Soy Garlic Chicken Popcorn (Chicken Poppers)

     In cooking sweet soy garlic chicken, first, prepare the chicken in a bite size cut. In a deep bowl, place the chicken. Add cornstarch, fish sauce, egg and a dash of pepper. Mix until well combined. Let it rest or marinate for 15 minutes. For the coating, mix all-purpose flour and garlic powder. Dredge the marinated chicken bites in the flour mixture. Then deep fry for 8 to 10 minutes or until it turns golden brown in color. Set aside for later.  

     To cook the sweet soy garlic sauce. In a cooking pan stir sugar, soy sauce, water, 1 and vinegar and garlic paste. Turn on the stove and continue stirring.  Dissolve cornstarch on water add it on the mixture.  Simmer until the sauce thickens in texture.  Add the fried chicken popcorn. Make sure all the chicken popcorn is evenly coated with the sauce. Sprinkle some sesame seeds.  Transfer to a plate, serve and enjoy!

Can we use other chicken parts?

Yes, you could use any chicken part. However, in this recipe we use chicken breasts and made chicken poppers to make them easier to eat.

Where can we find garlic paste?

Garlic paste can be bought in supermarkets and groceries.

Tips on Cooking this recipe

  • For best results, marinate the chicken for a longer time.
  • To have a much crunchier mouth feel on your chicken poppers, let it rest for a couple of minutes after dredging it from flour mixture. Fry the chicken once the flour coating forms gooey like appearance. However, make sure that the coating from all sides of the chicken popper is still full and didn’t stick on the plate where you let it rest.

Ingredients

  • 378.5 grams chicken breast bite cut size
  • 2 tbsp cornstarch
  • 1 tbsp fish sauce
  • 1/2 cup all purpose flour
  • 1/4 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 pc egg
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 1/2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 1/2 tbsp vinegar
  • 1 1/2 tbsp water
  • 1/4 tsp garlic paste
  • sesame seeds
  • black pepper
  • cooking oil for frying

Instructions

  • Prepare the chicken in a bite size cut.
  • Put the chicken bites in a deep bowl. Add 2 Tbsp of cornstarch, 3 Tbsp of fish sauce, 1 piece of egg and a dash of pepper. Mix until well combined. Let it sit or marinate for 15 minutes.
  • For the coating, mix 1/2 cup of all-purpose flour and 1/4 tsp of garlic powder.
  • Dredge the marinated chicken bites in the flour mixture.
  • Then deep fry for 8 to 10 minutes or until it turns golden brown in color. Set aside for later.  
  • Now for the sweet soy garlic sauce. In a cooking pan stir 1/4 cup of sugar, 1 and 1/2 Tbsp of soy sauce, 1 and 1/2 Tbsp of water, 1 and 1/2 Tbsp of vinegar and 1/4 tsp of garlic paste.
  • Turn on the stove and continue stirring.
  • Dissolve 1 tsp of cornstarch on 1/2 Tbsp of water add it on the mixture.
  • Simmer until the sauce thickens in texture.
  • Add the fried chicken popcorn. Make sure all the chicken popcorn is evenly coated with the sauce. Sprinkle some sesame seeds.
  • Pass on platter. Serve and Enjoy!
