HOW TO COOK SPICY SHRIMP AND CRABS

First, heat pan or pot, pour in water, add salt and crabs. Arrange the crabs so that all of them are soaked in the water. Bring to a boil. Continue boiling the crabs for 15 minutes while removing the foamy bubbles formed during boiling from time to time.

Add in corn and boil for 15 minutes more while stirring occasionally. Then, remove the crabs and set aside. Let the corn boil until it’s soft and cooked.  Once the corn is cooked, remove it and set aside.

Heat another pan, drizzle an ample amount of cooking oil for sautéing. Stir in the butter/margarine until it melts completely. Add garlic and saute. Once the garlic is golden brown, add in the onion and catsup and mix well.

Bring the sauce into a boil, then add sugar and chili powder, continue to stir. Add the shrimp while continuously stirring.  Simmer in low heat until shrimp is cooked. Add salt and black pepper to taste. Let it simmer for another minute then remove from heat.

In a bowl, place half of the crabs and pour in half of the shrimp and sauce. Mix well so that the crabs are covered in sauce. Add the remaining crabs, shrimp and sauce and mix well. Toss in the corn and mix. Plate and sprinkle with chopped spring onions on top.

What size of shrimp and crabs to use?

We use medium sized crabs and shrimp. Though we could use larger size of crabs, it is more difficult to toss and longer to cook. However, smaller sized crabs and shrimp are much time consuming to eat and tends to be less satisfying for some people.

What can we use if we chili powder is not available?

You can use chili flakes or a number of red chili peppers. The number of peppers to be used depends on your desired spiciness of the dish.
