HOW TO COOK TIKOY (NIAN GAO)

Nian Gao or more popularly known as Tikoy in the Philippines is a traditional Chinese new year’s cake made out of glutinous rice flour.  This sweet sticky dish can be eaten all year round but is most popular during the Chinese new year.

Learn how to cook nian gao/tikoy in as simple as slicing it in smaller pieces, dipping it in egg and pan frying it in oil.

HOW TO COOK TIKOY ( NIAN GAO )

     Let’s start cooking Nian Gao or tikoy. First, slice tikoy in small thin 1”x 2” portions. Then, beat an egg in a bowl.

     To cook, heat a pan and add cooking oil for deep frying. Once the oil is hot, get a slice of tikoy and dip it in the egg before putting them in the pan . Do not overcrowd the pan. Fry tikoy until it turns golden brown in color. Remove from heat and drain excess oil. Serve and enjoy.

can we fry the tikoy without dipping it in egg?

Tikoy can be fried without egg but it will be hard to do so because they tend to stick together or stick to the tongs if not coated. 

what can we use as substitute to egg for coating?

Flour or bread crumbs are sometimes used to coat the tikoy before frying it.

Tips on Cooking this recipe

  • Brush your knife with some oil before using it to slice the tikoy. It will help preventing the tikoy from sticking to the knife.
  • Make sure to drain the cooked tikoy from excess oil before serving them. During frying they tend to soak up much oil.

  • 500 grams tikoy (nian gao)
  • 1 pc egg
  • cooking oil for frying

Instructions

  • Slice tikoy in small thin 1”x 2” portions.
  • In a bowl, beat egg.
  • Heat a pan and add cooking oil for deep frying.
  • Once oil is hot, get a tikoy slices and dip it in the egg before putting them in the pan . Do not overcrowd the pan.
  • Fry until golden brown in color.
  • Remove from heat and drain excess oil.
  • Transfer to a plate, serve and enjoy.
