Easy Monte Cristo Sandwich Recipe

Monte Cristo sandwich is a variation of the French “croque monsieur” which means an egg-dipped ham and cheese sandwich that is pan or deep fried. It has been popular in the American cuisine since the early 1930’s, having different names such as French toasted cheese sandwich and Toasted ham sandwich.

Treat yourself with this mouthwatering sandwich simply by pressing a ham and cheese sandwich, dipping it in egg and milk and pan frying it.

HOW TO COOK Easy Monte Cristo Sandwich Recipe

     In making Monte Cristo sandwich, first cut the edges of the bread. Then slice quick-melt cheese.

     Start the sandwich stack by spreading a spoonful of mayonnaise evenly in one side of the bread. Then, arrange the slices of cheese on top and place a piece of slice ham. Spread a spoonful of mayo in both sides of the second bread slice and add it on the stack. Again, arrange slices of cheese and a piece of slice ham on top. Finish the stack with a bread with mayonnaise spread on one side. Press both sides of the stack to secure the filling.     

     In a deep plate whisk one piece of egg, milk and a pinch of salt. Drench the sandwich in the mixture.

     Heat a pan and melt in butter. Fry the sandwich in medium heat until it’s cooked. Transfer to a platte and serve.

can we use ordinary cheese?

Yes, you can use ordinary cheese. In this recipe we used quickmelt cheese, however you can also use cheddar, swiss or gruyere cheese.

What type of ham can we use?

In this recipe, we used sweet ham, but you can use cooked or spiced ham.

Tips on Cooking this recipe

  • Make sure to press the sandwich stack before drenching it to the egg milk mixture so that it wont soak up too much mixture that will make the sandwich soggy.
  • Shredded or sliced cooked chicken or turkey meat can be added to the sandwich stack.
  • You can add other condiments like mustard if preferred.

  • 56.9 grams quickmelt cheese
  • 4 tsp mayonnaise
  • 3 slices loaf bread
  • 1 pc egg
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 tbsp butter
  • salt
